Welcome to our website
It might be out of focus these days to get back a few hundred years. Making paper filigree (or quilling as it is mentioned nowadays) has got centuries long traditions, mostly in the Anglo-Saxon countries. These are the countries also today where this craft is still around to some extent. The literature is mostly also in English but a few books have been printed in Dutch and Spanish as well. Books and guides in Hungarian are being prepared, hopefully they will be out quite soon. Searching the web I can recommend strings like 'paper quilling' or 'paper filigree'.
The original meaning of the word 'filigree' is a tiny pieces of craftwork of gold and silversmiths. Silver you can see today plenty in the Mediterranean countries - in Lefkara in Cyprus or in Porto Portugal.
Paper filigree stands now for designs, artsmenship as well as for tiny items, products made of narrow (1,5 or 3 mm wide) coloured paper strips being twisted ('quilled') with different techniques.
You can make quite a wide range of items out of paper strips. I use mainly the original traditional techniques: rolling them into rings and then shaping into design or twisting them around pins create a base and then combine them into the shape and design.
For me it started in 1997 when I first saw small paper flowers quilled in a toys shop. From then I go on seeking, searching opportunities of use of these coloured paper strips. By now I use them not only as ornamental technique but I regularly concept and make individual items, products as pieces for home interior, gifts and festive occasions - beyond special greeting cards. Many of the latest items - lampshades, vases, bowls, boxes - were approved by the jury of Lectorate of Applied Arts. Also participated at the exhibitions - Hungarian Craftsmenship 2003 and 2004 - held in summers at the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts.
Present palette of the products in focus is made up of vases, boxes, picture frames, Christmas tree decoration pieces, 3D ornaments, gift tags, curtain decoration, greeting cards. (see Gallery 1) A small quantity of these individual items is available as for sale on demand. Enjoy your visit in our gallery of the paper filigree world.
A few years ago I also started to twist spring from coloured thin wire. In Galery you will also find jewels made out of these self twisted wire springs.
